The San Jose Earthquakes: A Legacy of Excellence

A Brief History of the Club

The San Jose Earthquakes are one of the most successful soccer clubs in the United States. Founded in 1974, the team has won two MLS Cups (2001 and 2003) and four US Open Cups (1995, 1997, 2001, and 2002). They were also the first American team to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1995.

The Early Years

The Earthquakes began their existence as a third division team in the North American Soccer League (NASL). They joined the first division in 1979, but were relegated to the second division after the 1982 season. The team returned to the first division in 1985, but folded after the 1988 season.

The MLS Era

The Earthquakes were one of the ten charter members of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996. The team has been a consistent playoff contender, reaching the MLS Cup final five times. They won their first MLS Cup in 2001, and then repeated as champions in 2003. The Earthquakes have also won the US Open Cup four times.

Current Status

The Earthquakes currently play their home games at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. The team is owned by John Fisher and is managed by Matias Almeyda. The Earthquakes are one of the most popular soccer teams in the United States, and their home games are often sellouts.
